Hi Andrea,

I just wanted you to know that the session on October 18th changed my life. I grew up eating meat and potatoes and having to make sure my plate was always clean - typical upbringing of the 60s and 70s. I never took the time to understand nutrition - I love food, I am not over-weight, so all is cool! So I thought.

The seminar taught me some very practical things and tips:

  • Food is fuel for your body - sounds simple and logical. But I never saw it that way - I always saw food as extra calories that I did not need, so I skipped most meals. I typically ate 1 or 2 meals per day. Often, dinner was a huge meal.
  • I now eat breakfast daily without fault and try not to skip lunch. I also try not to eat dinner past 8 pm. I've still not gotten at the mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks though! I have not put on additional weight as a result of eating three meals per day.
  • Balance - grain/starch, protein and fruits/vegetables. Again, a relatively simple notion - but one that was foreign to me. I'm not a big fan of fruit - but I now have a fruit juice every morning without failure. To catch up on my fruit/vegetable portions, I now look for vegetable soups for lunch, a small cup of diced fruit, a glass of V8 with every dinner, and often will graze on celery and carrots before dinner. I now consciously look for items from each group at each meal.
  • Portion distortion - I used to be guilty of this. I now exercise more control in serving sizes.
  • Awareness - I am much more aware of my food preparation and intake - in the past, I ate because I liked it. Now, I look for balance; I read labels; I look for substitutes; I try to understand the effect of all ingredients in preparing a meal - but I also still eat food that I like (just in moderation and in the context of what else I am eating). I developed a template to assist me with my daily meal planning and quantities.

But mostly Andrea, it's the common sense approach and the no “severe” rules approach that you used to deliver the material that made it worthwhile. I left feeling that I could do something about it and it was not going to be negative (I can still have my two glasses of wine!). I am now so much more aware of nutrition and its impact on my life.

It is with pleasure that I write this letter of endorsement for Andrea Holwegner.

I am the current President of the Calgary Dental Assistants Association.  Our organization acts as a liaison between the Registered Dental Assistants of Calgary and the College of Alberta Dental Assistants.  At this time, all of our members are women who work in the dental field whether it be chairside assistants or administrative assistants within the dental industry.  Our organization holds bi-monthly meetings to help bring education to our members to in turn educate the public about dental health.

We were fortunate enough to have Andrea come and speak with us for a morning session about Power Nutrition for Women.

This was a very great topic for our members as we are all women and it was helpful to know what kind of things we should be eating even if we do have hectic schedules as working women and mothers.
